Abstract
Dynamic object detection has been studied for several decades and continues to attract interest in various research fields. This paper reviews recent literature on dynamic object detection using 3D LiDAR sensors. It delineates the advantages of 3D LiDAR sensors over cameras for data acquisition, including adaptability to varying illumination conditions and the ability to directly measure object range without post-processing. The reviewed studies are categorized with respect to the install location of the sensor. While 3D LiDAR is commonly used in fixed settings or mounted on autonomous ground vehicles for detecting moving objects, research on dynamic object detection using LiDAR on UAVs are limited. The paper discusses the challenges contributing to such research gap and suggests some ideas for future studies.
