Abstract
A key challenge in designing immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences is the miscalibration between an objective environmental state and a user's behavioral response. We introduce the Scenario Difficulty Matrix (SDM) as a diagnostic tool to visualize this gap. Using data from 50 participants in a driving simulator, we plot a Passenger Response Index (PRI) against a comprehensive Objective Risk Score (ORS) that includes vehicles and pedestrians. The SDM reveals a critical miscalibration: the passenger's response is overwhelmingly driven by the vehicle's action rather than the objective risk. Scenarios involving the visceral, kinesthetic cue of braking produce a disproportionately strong response, peaking at a mean PRI of 0.89. Conversely, the most objectively dangerous scenario, an evasive maneuver with an alarm, elicits the weakest response, with a mean PRI of 0.07. This framework provides a powerful method for analyzing how different sensory cues drive user behavior in complex, motion-based VR systems.
