Abstract
A photothermal morphable tactile display using an LED array features a functional bilayer film placed above a pneumatic chamber. Near-infrared (NIR) light emitted from an LED array under the chamber induces localized softening of the film, enabling shape deformation through pneumatic pressure. The inherent radiation profile of LEDs causes light to diffuse beyond the target area, resulting in optical crosstalk. This paper presents a model to quantitatively estimate this crosstalk, considering the LED radiation profile and treating the aperture radius and pitch of the pneumatic chamber as key design parameters. A 10×10 NIR-LED array was fabricated to verify the model’s accuracy, and temperature distribution was measured using an infrared thermal camera. The model predicted crosstalk power ratios of 6.7% and 2.7% for adjacent and diagonal nodes, respectively. Experimental measurements yielded corresponding values of 6.5% ± 0.5% and 2.1% ± 0.3%, confirming the predictive model’s accuracy.
