Abstract
In this study, we investigate the impact of diode electrode structures on the efficiency of betavoltaic (BV) cells. By modifying the electrode configurations, Monte Carlo simulations predict that a fully covered anode structure degrades device efficiency due to the shielding of incident beta particles. However, contrary to thes e p redictions, experimental fabrication and evaluation reveal that BV cells with a fully covered anode exhibit higher efficiency. This result occurs because the fully covered anode reduces electrical losses in the device. In particular, it lowers the seri es resistance and helps more generated charge carriers reach the electrodes without being lost. As a result, the benefit of improved electrical transport is greater than the loss caused by b eta particle shielding. These findings show that optimizing the electrical design of the electrode can be more important than maximizing radiation absorption in BV cells.
