JVET은 VVC 이후 차세대 비디오 부호화 표준을 위해 ECM(Enhanced Compression Model)을 기반으로 다양한 화면내 예측 기법을 탐색하고 있다. ECM의 HoG(Histogram of Gradients) 기반 방향성 예측모드를 유도하는 화면내 부호화 툴에서, HoG를 계산하는 템플릿 위치와 실제 참조라인 방향의 불일치는 예측 성능을 저하할 수 있다. 즉, 좌측 템플릿에서 구한 큰HoG 누적 값으로 유도된 예측모드의 방향성에 따라 상관성이 떨어지는 상단 참조샘플로 예측이 수행될 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 템플릿과 모드 방향성의 불일치로 인한 예측성능 저하를 개선하기 위해, HoG 누적 크기를 템플릿-방향성의 일관성에 따라 조정하는 스케일링 기법을 제안한다. 제안방식은 ECM-18.0의 DIMD(Decoder-side Intra Mode Derivation), DIMD-Chroma, MDIP(Most Dominant Intra Prediction) 각각에 적용한 결과, 최대 0.02%의 BD-rate 절감의 성능개선 효과가 확인되었다.
