Abstract
In satellite communication systems operating in geosynchronous orbit (GSO), phase noise generated by the local oscillator of the receiver can degrade overall communication performance. In particular, in satellite communication systems employing higher-order modulation schemes, phase fluctuations caused by oscillator phase noise can distort the signal constellation and significantly degrade error vector magnitude (EVM) and bit error rate (BER). In this paper, the impact of local oscillator phase noise on the receiver performance of a GSO satellite communication system is analyzed at the system level. A phase noise sequence in the time domain is generated based on a given phase noise mask and applied to the received signal to evaluate communication performance in terms of EVM under various received signal power level conditions. The results show that the degree of performance degradation depends on the phase noise characteristics and receiver operating conditions. The results of this study provide useful insights for determining oscillator phase noise requirements and predicting receiver performance in GSO satellite communication systems.
