뉴스페이스(New space) 시대가 도래함에 따라 민간·국방 서비스 및 안보 분야 통신영역이 기존 지상·공중 중심에서 우주로 확장되고 있는 추세이다. 최근 비면허대역, 초광대역, 저지연, 저전력, 장거리 통신이 가능하고, 높은 채널 보안 특성과 Low-SWaP(Size, Weight and Power) 특징을 가지며, 전자기장 간섭에 무관한 레이저 기반 광무선통신 기술이 차세대 우주 통신 기술로 주목받고 있다. 실제로 NASA(National Aeronautics and Space Administration), ESA(European Space Agency), JAXA(Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), DLR(Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) 등 우주분야 세계 선두 연구기관과 SpaceX, TESAT, Mynaric, CACI 등 글로벌 우주기업들에서 우주 레이저 통신 기술을 지상-공중-우주-심우주 분야 차세대 다계층 통신 및 서비스 목적으로 기술개발과 실증 및 서비스를 진행 중이다. KASA(Korea Aero Space Administration) 또한 우주 레이저 통신 기술을 지구궤도를 넘어 달 및 화성 등 심우주 통신에 활용하고자 로드맵을 수립하고, NASA 및 ESA 등과 협력 중에 있다.
본 논문은 수백~수천 km 떨어진 우주 레이저 통신 시스템 간 장거리·초정밀 양방향 통신이 가능하도록 레이저 통신 링크 구축과 전방지향각(Point Ahead Angle) 제어에 활용 가능하며, 수신각 제어를 통한 광결합 효율 향상 목적으로 폭넓게 활용 가능한 고속·정밀 조정 거울(Fast/Fine Steering Mirror)의 지향각 제어 특성 연구 결과에 대해 제시한다.
