Abstract
This paper investigates mechanisms for identifying, within the ATSC 3.0 protocol suite, services that carry inter-tower communications network (ITCN) data. ITCN over ATSC 3.0 has emerged as a promising opportunity in the context of infrastructure integration, particularly for in-band distribution in which media services and ITCN payloads (e.g., backhaul traffic) are multiplexed within the same broadcast channel. Because such heterogeneous multiplexing targets receivers with different roles and capabilities, ITCN services require an explicit identifier to enable selective discovery and processing. Candidate design options are examined across ATSC 3.0 protocol layers, with emphasis on the physical and delivery layers, and their tradeoffs are compared. Based on this analysis, a simple Service Layer Table (SLT) enhancement is recommended by introducing a new service category to label ITCN services.
