Abstract
This paper presents the design principles of the ATSC 3.0 MIMO Extension and provides an integrated description of the two standardized Layered MIMO modes—Type A (MIMO + MIMO superposition) and Type B (SISO + MIMO superposition), by summarizing the results in [1]. These modes enable the joint operation of MIMO and LDM, supporting both high spectral efficiency and backward compatibility. HW-based field trials conducted in Korea and Brazil confirm the real-world feasibility of Layered MIMO and demonstrate that both operational types are ready for deployment in next-generation terrestrial broadcasting systems.
