Abstract
Recently, ATSC 3.0 has been revised to support enhanced and flexible multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission through the ATSC 3.0 MIMO Extension, which enables the combined use of layered division multiplexing (LDM) and MIMO, referred to as Layered MIMO. This paper presents a field experimental verification of an ATSC 3.0– compliant broadcasting system operating in a MIMO-only service configuration. Both LDM-based MIMO multiplexing (Layered MIMO Type A) and time-division multiplexing (TDM)-based MIMO multiplexing schemes were implemented on an FPGA-based transmission and reception platform to integrate two MIMO signals with different robustness levels. Field measurements were conducted to evaluate the feasibility and reliability of reception performance under fixed, indoor, and mobile reception environments, including the first experimental field evaluation of TDM-based MIMO multiplexing within the ATSC 3.0 framework. The test results confirm that LDM-based MIMO multiplexing provides an overall reception performance advantage over TDM-based multiplexing.
