Abstract
Climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressures have intensified eutrophication in inland waters, increasing the frequency of harmful algal blooms (HABs), while conventional in situ monitoring networks remain limited in spatial coverage and timeliness. This study analyzes the dynamics of the algal bloom in Andong Reservoir, South Korea, using Sentinel-2 imagery from 2019 to 2025. Three spectral indices, NDCI, FAI, and MCI, were evaluated to characterize subsurface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and surface-floating algae, revealing clear seasonal variability with elevated NDCI in summer–autumn and consistently low FAI, indicating limited surface bloom formation. Validation against in situ Chl-a measurements from five IoT-based stations indicates that only FAI exhibits a meaningful correlation under same-day matching (r = 0.693), whereas the remaining indices show weak or inconsistent relationships. This performance likely reflects constraints in the in situ dataset, including the short monitoring period. These findings underscore the need for expanded ground observations for robust satellite-based bloom monitoring in optically complex inland waters.
