Abstract
Visual-to-auditory Sensory Substitution Technology (VSST) transforms image data into sound, enabling users to perceive visual information through hearing. Acquiring this novel perceptual ability demands a continuous and highly efficient training process, analogous to the sensory development that occurs after birth. This research directly addresses the challenge of optimizing this skill development, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of VSST training methodologies through systematic structuring and dynamic intervention strategies. This study designed two sequential experiments to evaluate the core factors influencing training efficacy. The first experiment assessed the impact of structured training by comparing an experimental group following a detailed training protocol against a control group that received only simple, repetitive practice. The second experiment analyzed the impact of intervention on training effectiveness by classifying instructor intervention types into four categories. The results showed that the experimental group achieved 82.75% in accuracy, compared to 78.94% for the control group, representing a statistically significant difference ($p < 0.05$). Similarly, groups receiving intervention achieved an accuracy of 82.67%, compared to 78.83% for those without, while qualitative assessments revealed that metacognitive intervention was the most effective among the four types. This research provides a basis for establishing methodology-oriented training systems beyond a technology-centered approach. It will serve as a crucial foundation for the real-world application of sensory substitution systems and for improving learning efficiency in the future.
