Abstract
There has been a significant increase in the level of interest regarding the Smart Grid that delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology with two-way communications to control appliances at consumers' homes to save energy, reduce cost and increase reliability. Such an electricity network is being promoted as a way of resolving energy independence, global warming and energy resilience issue. The Smart Grid can be called the merger of two networks: the conventional electrical transmission & distribution network, and the modern data communications network as shown in Figure 1. Elements controlled by the Smart Grid include devices for power consumption and monitoring in homes and commercial dwellings, such as meters, electric appliances, pools, electric vehicles, as well as power generation and distribution assets of the Power Grid, including transformers and generators.
