최근 테라헤르츠 대역의 주파수를 이용하여 데이터 전송속도 10Gbps 이상의 초고속 통신시스템에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 테라헤르츠 대역의 주파수 범위는 100GHz~10THz로서 종래의 밀리미터파 대역에서 사용하고 있는 대역폭에 비하여 월등히 넓은 주파수 대역폭을 제공하여 주기 때문에 미래의 초고속 통신시스템 응용에 무한한 잠재적 가치를 가지고 있다. 테라헤르츠 전파는 전자파와 광파의 특성을 모두 가지고 있어 공간으로 전파하며 광의 특성에 따라 광학 렌즈를 이용하여 방사 빔을 집속할 수 있다. 또한 테라헤르츠파는 전파 감쇠가 대단히 커서 현재의 기술수준을 고려해 볼 때 10m 정도의 단거리 통신에 적합하다. 미국, 유럽, 일본 등 테라헤르츠 선도국에서는 핵심 부품 및 MMIC 등의 연구 개발에 많은 투자를 하고 있다. 본 고에서는 테라헤르츠 통신을 위한 집적화 RF 송수신기 기술개발 동향에 대하여 소개하고자 한다.
