Abstract
Applications of sensor networks for energy critical infrastructure monitoring are rising rapidly. Majority of these applications fall under the urban/metropolitan sensor networks (USN). These applications require simple and extremely low-cost communication environment with reliable data transfer and long deployment lifetime. A low-rate wireless personal area network (LR-WPAN) can effectively control and manage the operations of such applications. In this paper, we present a discussion on the USN/LR-WPAN for lowenergy critical infrastructure monitoring applications. We also propose a medium access control (MAC) protocol based on framed slotted Aloha scheme. We investigated optimal frame size, slot duration, and packet size. We present performance evaluation for energy efficiency and lifetime.
