Abstract
A general streaming system includes for the media synchronization. As a basic function, a transmitter generates a timestamp and inserts it in a media stream such that a receiver side can restore the play-out time of the media units. MPEG system standard provides timestamps, such as Program Clock Reference (PCR), Presentation Time Stamp (PTS), and Decoding Time Stamp (DTS), and defines a synchronization model in a system layer. On the contrary, IEFT provides timestamps, such as RTP timestamp, and Network Time Protocol (NTP) timestamp. Each RTP packet carries a 32 bits timestamp which reflects the sampling instant of the first byte in the data packet. For MPEG payloads, the sampling instant is derived from a 90 KHz clock. Besides RTP timestamps, an NTP timestamp is also transported in the RTCP Sender Report (SR) packet. This paper proposes a proper timestamp-related header format for MT E-layer timing model to support media synchronization in MMT system based media service. The proposed time stamping service provides for sender/receiver timing matching for synchronization of several media sources.
