최근 USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Networks) 기술은 차세대 핵심기술로 시범사업 수준의 테스트 환경을 벗어나 사회 전반적인 분야에 적용이 시도되고 있으며, 환경관리, 재난 방지, 홈네트워크 및 헬스케어 등 다양한 분야에서의 적용 사례가 증가하고 있다. 특히, 산업 IT 및 산업용 네트워크 관련 시장 발표에 의하면 자동차 및 우주항공 분야와 같은 산업 분야 보다는 광범위한 공장 라인과 시스템 설비를 갖추고 있는 정유, 가스, 전력 등의 프로세스 설비 분야에서의 산업용 무선 통신 기술의 성장세가 클 것으로 전망된다. 본 고에서는 USN 기술을 기반으로 한 보다 안정적인 플랜트 시설물 관리 및 구성요소를 고찰하며, ISA 100 기반의WirelessHART, Honeywell, Apprion 등과 같은 새로운 무선 표준을 활용한 다양한 연구 사례를 소개한다.
