본고에서는 기계를 위한 영상부호화(VCM) 기술의 유망성을 ①영상 처리 환경변화로 VCM 기술 필요성 증가, ② 영상의 산업적 활용성 제고에 따른 응용 분야 확대, ③관련 산업의 성장으로 인한 잠재적인 시장성 증가 등의 관점에서 탐색해 보았다. 첫째, 다양한 영상센서의 확산, 기기간 연결성 증대, AI 기반 영상인식 기술 발전 등으로 VCM 기술 필요성 증가가 예상된다. 둘째, 영상 감시, 지능형 교통 및 제조 등 유망산업 분야에서의 영상 활용성 제고에 따라 VCM 기술의 응용 분야도 확대될 전망이다. 마지막으로, 자율주행차용 영상센서, 지능형 CCTV 및 열화상 탐지 솔루션 등의 관련 산업성장은 VCM 기술의 잠재적인 시장가치를 높일 것으로 보인다. 이처럼 발전 가능성이 높은 VCM 기술의 경쟁력을 확보하기 위하여 체계적인 R&D 정책 수립 및 추진이 필요하다.
