미국의 SRI International은 제2차 세계대전 이후 미국 서부 해안지역의 경제발전을 촉진하기위해 1946년에 설립된 비영리연구소로, 실리콘밸리 혁신을 이끌어 온 주역 중 하나이다. SRI International은 산업, 의학, 교육, 정부 등 거의 모든 분야에서 R&D를 수행하고 있다. 컴퓨터 마우스, 자율이동로봇, 원격수술로봇, 자연어음성인식, 인공근육, 말라리아 치료제 등 수 많은 혁신제품을 등장시켰으며, 뉘앙스(Nuance), 시리(Siri), 인튜이티브서지컬(Intuitive Surgical) 등의 기업을 분사시켜 수십억 달러의 새로운 산업을 창출했다. 본 Brief에서는 SRI International에 대한 현황 분석을 통해 ICT 출연(연)에 주는 시사점을 도출하고자 한다. 본 보고서의 주요 내용은 SRI International 홈페이지 자료, 인터넷 검색자료 및 국립과학 재단(NSF)의 비영리연구소 관련 데이터베이스 등을 토대로 작성하였다.
