1969년에 군사적 목적으로 개발된 ARPANET에서 시작한 인터넷은 1980년 초에 우리나라에 소개되어 2005년12월 현재 3,300만 명(인터넷 이용률 72.8%)이 이용하는 우리 생활의 기본 인프라로서 자리매김을 하고 있다. 이러한 인터넷은 현재까지 오면서 몇 번의 새로운 국면을 맞는데 그 중에 하나가 1990년대 초에 WWW(World Wide Web, 웹)의 출현이다. 웹은 기존의 Telnet, Ftp, Gopher, Archie 등과 같은 기술을 알고 다룰 수 있는 소수 전문가들의 전유물이었던 인터넷을 마우스 클릭만으로 원하는 정보를 얻을 수 있는 누구나 접근할 수 있는 공간으로 변모시켰다. 현재 우리는 아침에 출근하면 이메일을 체크하고, 메신저를 통해서 친구의 안부를 묻고, 은행이나 증권사에 가지 않고 송금이나 주식거래를 한다. 또한 인터넷을 통해 최신 뉴스를 보고 필요한 물건을 주문한다.
